Our force would be
the winning and voter turnout for the progressive movement if the ambition, diversity, and energy that characterizes younger generations were matched with a platform that provided the educational and organizational tools needed to drive change.
if the young people, some of whom have more free time due to COVID-19 no longer sat and watched the world change through headlines, but became empowered to go and drive the change themselves.
if large organizations, individual activists, and users of all backgrounds could collaborate and organize with rapid, far- reaching communication.
TurnUp is creating a new wave of youth voters and activists.
When young people receive content personalized to their political interests, they not only become more informed, but more engaged. On TurnUp, users will have content feeds that are filled with the issues and the events that they care about and have access to the resources they need to make social change. They will be more likely to attend events, meet others who share their passions, connect with their local representatives to push for change, and VOTE!
We have experienced tremendous amounts of political, economic, and social turmoil in our lives.
We have witnessed 9/11, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Great Recession, extreme environmental changes, the impeachment of a president, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fallout of centuries-old racial injustice.
The 2020 election will be a turning point for America, and we need young voters to turn out, speak up, and continue fighting after the election. The inspired youth need a place to channel their knowledge and ambition in order for their voices to transcend existing social media platforms.
There will now be a tool made for youth activists.
We've tried Instagram and Snapchat to organize, but Stories disappear after 24 hours and algorithms on those platforms tailor content to the user’s existing preferences and beliefs, limiting the spread of information. On Twitter and Facebook, youth presence is inconsistent. These apps do not cater to the needs of young activists who want to learn, discuss, and act. But TurnUp does.
Our short-term mission: youth TurnUp for the 2020 election!
We saw huge voter turnout for ages 18-29 in the 2018 midterm elections, but young people are still falling behind other generations at the polls. We know there is great potential to increase voter turnout among young people in 2020. We want to see 50% of all 18-29 year olds vote this year!
