IS THE PLATFORM ENCRYPTED?
TurnUp uses Firebase (a Google product) for storing and using information (ie our backend/database). Firebase services encrypt data in transit using HTTPS and logically isolate customer data. In addition, Firebase (in the databases we use) also encrypts their data at rest. Please see Firebase policies for additional details.
If you are looking for an encrypted messaging platform for any purpose, including keeping your organizing secure, we would recommend platforms like Wire.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR DIGITAL SECURITY? ARE YOU AFRAID OF OUTSIDE INTERVENTION, MANIPULATION OR SABOTAGE BY ONLINE MISCHIEF-MAKERS (POLITICAL, EXTREMIST GROUPS, OTHERS)?
TurnUp has worked with experts on comprehensive digital security. TurnUp has an extensive flagging and moderation system, enabling every post, event or person to be flagged for our reviewers. We monitor these flags, and if any user is found to be acting against our
values of social justice, they are taken off of the platform.
HOW DO I REPORT A USER?
You may report another user by selecting “Report the user” or “Block and report” in your conversations with that user. Take a moment to specify the reason you are reporting them, and our team will look into it promptly!
HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY SUGGEST CHANGES OR TAGS OR RESOURCES?

ARE THERE ADS?

IS THE APP FREE?
TurnUp is completely free for users to download and use!
HOW WILL YOU MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF THE APP?
We hope to increase the voter turnout for 18-29 year olds to 60% for the 2020 elections. We also are increasing the turnout at activism events, increase the number of young people ages 29 and under that are civically engaged, and help issue-based organizations engage more young people. We will assess these metrics using data from TurnUp such as the number of events people sign up to attend, the people committing to vote using our voting reminders, and the general activity on the platform (like the number of times the app is opened). We will also get pre and post data from our subscribers and beta testers to understand the impact upon their group in terms of how it affects their organizing process and their events.
HOW MUCH SUPPORT DOES THE PLATFORM HAVE?
This innovative platform is powered by a broad range of growing support including: more than 25 foundations and individuals donors, the prestigious Fast Forward tech non-profit accelerator, our esteemed advisory board, the over 50 progressive organizations and social media influencers we partner with, and our enthusiastic team of over 500 young people from over 400 college campuses. HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS? WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL?
Before creating TurnUp we studied 48 social media and civic tech platforms and found wide open space for TurnUp. A lot of the same functions that TurnUp offers can be found spread across a variety of other platforms. However, we’ve implemented all of the features we recognize as being the most effective and useful for activism specifically and we've put them all together.
Elements like events and organizations, which make TurnUp conducive to organizing, are in that category, but are absent from many of the platforms (like Snapchat and Instagram) that are most popular among our target demographic: young adults. TurnUp strives to encourage both online and offline activism. Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat are, in large part, not conducive to organizing, while TurnUp is designed to encourage collaboration and association among large groups of activists.
IS TURNUP FOR PEOPLE THAT AREN’T “YOUTH”?
TurnUp is for everyone. We encourage people of all ages to join TurnUp.
WHAT IS AN IMPACT SCORE?
One of the struggles with being an activist is that it’s not always easy to see direct results of your efforts or gauge how much of a difference you’re making. The Impact Score system is designed not to replace the true reward of activism -- making the world a better place -- but rather to give you a metric for understanding how much you are doing.
WHY BUILD A NEW APP RATHER THAN USE EXISTING PLATFORMS?
A lot of the same functions that TurnUp offers can be found spread across a variety of other platforms. However, we’ve implemented all of the features we recognize as being the most effective and useful for activism, and tailored for youth specifically. Elements like events and organizations, which make TurnUp conducive to organizing, are in that category, but are absent from many of the platforms (like Snapchat and Instagram) that are most popular among our target demographic: young adults.
HOW DOES THE PLATFORM LEVERAGE THE DIFFERENT MODES OF INTERACTIONS—GAMING, USER-GENERATED CONTENT, CROSS-PLATFORM PROMOTION ETC?
People today are used to dealing with a cross-platform web of connected spaces on the internet. TurnUp is an app that people can use for 60 seconds or all day as they organize an event. It’s an app that people can use to communicate with their friends from school or with like-minded people they’ve met while playing video games. TurnUp thrives on the strength of the connections between people who want to make the world a better place, and it’s always easily accessible at your fingertips.

WHY IS TURNUP A NON-PROFIT?
We believe that a non-profit model is the best way to serve the common good by providing widespread access to our platform. We aren’t interested in corporate, profit-driven motivations interfering with our mission to help make change. Our shareholders are the millions of young people who want to make this country a better place through activism. We are a non-profit because we believe that democracy isn’t for sale. We do not believe in making money off of civic engagement, social justice organizing.
WHERE DID THE FUNDING COME FROM?
This innovative platform is powered by a broad range of growing support including more than 25 foundations (both national and local) and individual donors and the prestigious
Fast Forward tech non-profit accelerator.
DO YOU HAVE A FUNDRAISING GOAL AND WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH ADDITIONAL RESOURCES?
To leverage our app for November, we are raising $1,000,000 to help our platform reach 400,000 youth in key states like MI, PA, OH, and TX, and create historic voter turnout of 18-29 year olds.

DO YOUR DEVELOPERS, CONTENT-MAKERS COME FROM DIVERSE ECONOMIC, AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS? ARE DIVERSE VOICES AND PERSPECTIVES REPRESENTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE APP ITSELF? (UNDERSTANDING THAT THE USAGE ON THE PLATFORM WILL GROW AND INSPIRE MANY VOICES) STRUCTURAL RACISM IS AN ENORMOUS CHALLENGE. HOW DOES TURNUP ADDRESS IT?
Yes. TurnUp’s goal is to provide an information freeway so that everyone, including the most disenfranchised, can have access to information about how to organize. TurnUp is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA). In addition to our diverse staff and volunteers, we have an IDEA working group that works to make TurnUp as inclusive as possible. We strive for diversity within our organization as well as with the user population of our platform. TurnUp is a safe space for people from all backgrounds to share their experiences and make their voices heard.
Additionally, all manifestations of racism or hate are not allowed on our platform; we are pushing a message of positivity and inclusivity. We have proactively reached out to every community/affinity club at almost every college in the United States, offering the opportunity for them to join TurnUp. Our goal is to amplify the voices of those that are most disenfranchised.
